Chartered in 1834, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is the largest, busiest, and oldest continuously operating commuter railroad in the United States. In 2024, this 24/7/365 operation served 75\.5 million riders on a system that stretches nearly 120 miles – from Penn Station and Grand Central Madison in Manhattan to Montauk on the eastern tip of Long Island.
JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for the maintenance and construction off all LIRR structural assets throughout the entire territory, including, but not limited to repairing wooden railroad bridges, trestles, tunnel supports, stations, platforms, overpasses, underpass, retaining walls and performing a variety of conventional carpentry, construction, concrete work, painting, general masonry work, tiling, and taping.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:* Repair wooden railroad bridges, trestles, and tunnel supports.
* Repair/replace structural members of bridges.
* Performing a variety of concrete and conventional carpentry and construction work and related duties, including, but are not limited to painting, general masonry work, tiling, taping, spackling, and wallpapering, and snow removal/shoveling.
* Utilizing and/or handling both hand and power tools.
* Digging trenches and holes.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:* Must have a four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC) approved by a State’s Department of Education or recognized accredited organization.
* Prior carpentry or related construction experience.
* Must have a valid Drivers License and be able to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) permit at time of hire.
* Ability to demonstrate good oral and written communication skills.
* Must be able to give as well as receive and understand oral and written instructions.
* Must be able to read simple blueprints or drawings.
* Must provide own hand\-tools and customary carpentry tools (list provided by LIRR).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:* Trade school/vocational training in carpentry.
* Completion of an apprenticeship program
