The Railcar Repair (Carman)
position is vital for maintaining and repairing railcars to ensure their safe and efficient operation.
This is a full-time
Â
position (40 hrs/wk)
and is subject to seniority and governed by union agreement. Assigned shift may be one of three 8-hour shifts. Mechanical shops operate 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.  Â
Travel
is minimal.
Training
is company paid on-the-job paid training.
Key responsibilities may include:
Â
Inspecting
railcar frames
, bodies, safety appliances (hand holds, sill steps, running boards, etc.), and wheels (rim treads, plates, hub axles and bearing) for holes, cracks, and other defects to ensure good repair of equipment.
Maintaining
,
replacing, inspecting, and repairing
air brake components and ensuring air brake system equipment is compliant with current regulations.
Operating
electrical and gas welding equipment
and acetylene/MAPP torches to join a variety of metals and alloys as well as cutting and shaping metal parts.
Operating
specialized off-highway motor vehicles
(forklifts, mobile cranes, track mobiles, and UTVs).
Daily work is conducted in a safety sensitive environment
where the working conditions can
include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet)
, walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working on or around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.Â

Basic Qualifications:

At least 18 years of age or will be by the start date listed above.Â

Ability to report for duty at the designated work location.

Able to work safely in the above working conditions.

Able to work the above shift/hours.

Ability to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) English.

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs without assistance.

Possess a valid driver’s license.Â

Ability to visually distinguish colors - red, blue, green, yellow, lunar (clear light)  
Â
Ability to differentiate between verbal and non-verbal sounds (signals, alarms, etc.) and discriminate (comprehend) verbal communication in the work environment. Â
Ability to use hands and use hand tools to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning and pulling. 
Â
Ability to climb ladders and get on/off equipment. 
Â
Ability to occasionally work from various heights including making repairs on top of railcars.  
Â
Ability to bend, walk, stand, and sit occasionally with breaks.  
Â
Follow safety policies and procedures; wear the required personal protective equipment.

is with the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen and union dues are required per union agreement.
