PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The Environment and Remediation Specialist oversees environmental compliance, risk management, and remediation activities supporting CPKC operations across the Southern United States. This role combines day-to-day compliance support with strategic oversight of remediation sites and programs to ensure regulatory compliance, risk reduction, and property restoration.
The Specialist partners closely with internal teams, regulators, contractors, and senior leadership to support operations, emergency response, capital projects, and long-term remediation planning. This position can be based in Kansas City or
in the Southern United States where CPKC has offices, with accountability for safety, environmental performance, and financial stewardship.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Manage day-to-day environmental compliance for CPKC operations across the Southern U.S., including administration of stormwater, Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC), waste management, Tier II reporting, and related programs
Support the Environmental Assurance Program through inspections, audits, corrective actions, and compliance reporting
Provide environmental support for capital projects, including planning, permitting, implementation, and project close-out
Coordinate and manage third-party environmental contractors and consultants
Lead environmental emergency response efforts, including derailments, spills, and releases, working with internal teams, regulators, and emergency responders to ensure compliance and site restoration
Serve as the primary liaison with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies during routine operations, incidents, and follow-up actions
Manage a portfolio of remediation sites, including environmental risk assessment, liability reporting, remedial investigations, and remediation activities aligned with regulatory requirements and long-term strategy
Support environmental due diligence, remediation strategy, and technical review for land transactions, negotiations, and litigation matters
Manage remediation budgets, accruals, forecasts, and performance metrics while contributing to continuous improvement of environmental systems and programs

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Geology, Chemistry, or a related discipline
Minimum 3 years of related experience in environmental science or engineering
Progressive experience in environmental compliance, remediation, and risk management within industrial, transportation, or regulated environments
Working knowledge of U.S. federal and state environmental regulations (e.g., Clean Water Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), Emergency Planning and Community Right‑to‑Know Act (EPCRA), Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC)
Experience managing environmental remediation projects and environmental liabilities
Proven ability to manage consultants, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams
Experience working with regulatory agencies and supporting negotiations, litigation, or land transactions
Strong project management, communication, and analytical skills
Excellent working knowledge of current MS Office programs
Bilingual (English/Spanish) is an asset
