Job Description
Key Responsibilities
* Ensure full compliance with all railroad safety rules, operational standards, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations
* Safely move trains within yard limits and across road crossings
* Operate locomotive controls, including throttle and braking systems; monitor and interpret gauges and instrumentation
* Operate valves and switches both inside and outside the cab, including applying and releasing hand brakes
* Align and operate track switches; inspect railcars and equipment; utilize radio communication to control train movements
* Assist and instruct train crews in coupling/uncoupling cars, operating switches, and performing minor repairs (e.g., replacing couplings or air brake hoses)
* Maintain situational awareness to ensure safety and identify suspicious activity
* Review work instructions from the Trainmaster and coordinate with train crews
* Execute and manage railcar switching operations according to switch lists
* Communicate effectively with yard personnel using proper hand signals and radio protocols
* Follow direction from conductors and brakemen
* Direct train and railcar movements using approved signaling methods (lantern, hand, flag, or radio), including starting, stopping, and reversing movements
* Observe, interpret, and relay all signals affecting train movement
* Verify switch alignment and track conditions prior to movement within yard limits or on the mainline
* Read and interpret rule books, timetables, bulletins, train orders, waybills, placards, and safety documentation
* Complete required documentation, including daily reports, switch lists (manual or digital), and train orders
* Inspect trains and equipment both in motion and at rest
* Couple air and electrical connections between locomotives when assembling trains
* Accurately judge speed and distance of moving equipment
* Retain and apply critical operational information
Additional Duties
* Follow all safety procedures to prevent workplace accidents and injuries
* Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, hearing protection, safety\-toe boots, and safety glasses
* Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned
Essential Skills \& Requirements
* Physical Qualifications: Must meet vision and hearing standards and pass required testing
* Technical Aptitude: Knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems preferred
* Safety Focus: Demonstrated commitment to safety in all operating conditions and environments
* Flexibility: Ability to work irregular schedules, and holidays
Experience Requirements
* 1–3 years of prior locomotive engineer experience
* Proven clean safety record
Pay: $20\.00 \- $25\.00 per hour
